Basic Wig For A Lady Doll

A step-by-step guide

Materials required:

Viscose Wigging
Tacky Glue
Old toothbrush (or similar) for brushing out viscose
Piece of thread to match hair colour (optional)
Fine Metal knitting needle
Small Scissors

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

STEP 1: Run a line of tacky glue from ear to ear at the hair line. Allow the glue to get a little tacky.

STEP 2: Take a piece of viscose from the hank about 1/4" thick and about 4" long.  Spread it out over the line of glue. There should be about 1/16" of hair above the line and the rest hanging down over the face of the doll.

STEP 3: Apply glue to the hair above the 'line' and smooth down onto the head with your finger.

Step 4 Step 5 Step 6

STEP 4: Keep applying glue and viscose around the head until you have an even layer all around. Allow to dry thoroughly.

STEP 5: Once the glue is completely dry, brush the hair up and back (I use an old toothbrush) into a pony tail and tie off using a piece of thread to match hair colour (or you can use a very fine piece of the viscose). Apply a small amount of tacky glue to keep it in place and allow to dry.

STEP 6: Cut off the excess viscose and apply tacky glue to the remaining knob. Allow to dry thoroughly.

You now have a basic wig to which you can add a variety of detail (see some examples below).

Adding detail

A step-by-step guide

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

STEP 1:  Take a long thin strand of viscose. (Don't cut off the ends of the strand.) The thickness of the strand will depend on the thickness of curl you require.

STEP 2:  Wind the viscose on to a fine knitting needle by turning the needle with one hand and holding the strand of viscose with the other. Keep winding until you get to the end of the strand. To set the curl you can either pour boiling water over the needle and allow to dry or steam with a hot iron.  Before removing the curl from the needle spray well with hairspray.

STEP 3:  Remove the curl from the needle and cut off the end to make it even.  Glue the very end onto the centre of the knob of your basic wig you created earlier.

Step 4 Alternate style

STEP 4:  Apply glue to the rest of the knob area and wind the curl around creating a bun.  Once the bun is to the required size cut off and tuck the end in under the bun with a little glue.

ALTERNATE STYLE

To create ringlets simply cut the curl into the required lengths and glue the top of the ringlets over the knob.
