Applying Jewellery To Your Dolls

A step-by-step guide

This necklace consists of a thin ‘chain’ of Ballentine and 5 settings with point back rhinestones in the center.

Materials Required:

4pp Point Back Rhinestones
Gold or Silver Ballentine  (Rhinestones and ballentine available from Dollhouse and Craft)
Matte Mod Podge or similar matt glue
Gloss Mod Podge or similar gloss sealer
Toothpicks
Fine needle
Fine paint brush
Xacto knife or scalpel
Doll head with shoulder plate
Magnifier  (while not absolutely necessary, you will find you end up with a much neater finish and makes sorting the Ballentine a lot easier)

General Instructions

Sort the Ballentine so you have quite a few the same size.  Place them on a saucer so that when they roll about they don’t have too far to go.  Use a wet toothpick to pick up the Ballentine.  When applying the glue work in small quantities at a time.  Apply the glue to the doll with a fine needle or toothpick as a brush will get clogged up very quickly and a needle will do a much more accurate job of getting the glue exactly where you want it.  Clean up around the Ballentine as you go as much as you can before the glue dries with a toothpick.  Once the glue is dry, if you need to clean up excess glue use an Xacto knife or scalpel (or sharp needle) to cut and scrape it away.

STEP 1:  Starting at the centre of the throat of the doll just below where the collar bone would be apply a little matt Mod Podge and then before the glue dries (be quick!) apply the Ballentine one at a time in a curved line

STEP 2:  Continued to apply Mod Podge and ballentine until you get to the back of the neck.  If you aren’t happy with the line you can remove that part and redo it

STEP 3:  Find the centre of the throat again and apply glue and then 3 ballentine in a triangle shape.

STEP 4:  Starting at the ballentine that is the peak of the triangle, make a circle using 6 more Ballentine. You should have 7 ballentine in total in the circle when done.  Wait for this ‘setting’ to dry completely before going on to the next step as you want to apply a little pressure to set the stone correctly and you don’t want to mess up your circle.

STEP 5:  Take a little glue (not too much) and drop it into the centre of the setting.  Using your wet toothpick pick up a rhinestone (touching the toothpick to the coloured part of the stone) and drop it into the centre of the setting.  Use your toothpick to get it straight and push it down a little to make sure the glue will hold it.

Now at this point you have a necklace with a single drop and if you wanted to you could stop there.  (See Step 9 regarding sealing your work).  The next few steps show how to make the necklace with five drops.

STEP 6:  Decide where you want the other four drops to be (space them evenly) and apply 3 ballentine in a triangle as you did in Step 3 for each drop.

STEP 7:  As you did in Step 4, apply ballentine in a circle at the peak of the triangle for each drop.  Wait for the settings to dry completely.

STEP 8:  Apply glue and drop the rhinestones into each setting one at a time, adjusting them with your toothpick as you go to get them straight.

STEP 9:  Using the Gloss Mod Podge and a fine paint brush, seal your necklace and then clean up any excess sealer with a toothpick or Xacto knife.

Your necklace is finished.
