In the late sixties hoops collapse and the excess of fabric, no longer supported by steel circles, began to bunch toward the back of the figure.  Some support was needed thus was the bustle born.  This distinctive feature of women's clothing was to dominate the silhouette for nearly twenty years.

After the complicated dressmaking of the mid-1870's the silhouette became more streamlined and elegant, then suddenly the bustle came back bigger and better.  Some call it the 'ugly period', others refer to the 'shelf styles' of the period.  (Patterns are 1/12 scale)
